Presented at the 15th edition of Lo schermo dell'arte, 2022 The latest film by Palestinian-born American artist Jumana Manna chronicles the conflict between Israeli authorities responsible for parks and nature reserves and the Palestinian people, especially women and the elderly, who collect edible wild plants such as 'akkoub (similar to artichokes) and za'atar (thyme). Filmed in the Golan Heights, Galilee and Jerusalem, through the use of fiction, documentary and archival footage, Forages shows conflicts between Israeli collectors and patrols, courtroom drama, and moments in the kitchen. With a veil of irony, Jumana Manna shows how these laws constitute for the Palestinians a further form of alienation from their land, and speaks of their resilience in defending their traditions, in opposition to the attitude of the representatives of the Israeli state who insist on their own scientific competence and their duty to protect nature.
Starting from the simple act of collecting wild plants, the film raises important political questions about the absurdities that Palestinian people face under Israeli occupation.
