Presented at Lo schermo dell’arte 2020 On March 8, 2008, the artist Pippa Bacca left Milan with her friend Silvia Moro, both dressed as brides, to embark on their Brides on Tour trip/performance to Jerusalem. The performance involved hitchhiking, to bring a message of peace to war-torn, conflicted territories: Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel. The trip ended in tragedy near Istanbul, where Pippa was brutally murdered by a man who’d given her a lift. Through interviews with her four sisters and her mother, and thanks to the montage of materials filmed by the two artists, Simone Manetti’s film reconstructs the story, leading us into the depths of the Milanese artist’s work. The family tells of the unconventional, all-female climate in which Pippa grew up. Their memories are intertwined with footage of various stages of the performance that still transmit a strong message of trust in humanity.
Simone Manetti (Livorno 1978). After a ten-year career in editing, he made his directorial debut in 2014 with the short A New Family, which was screened at over 50 international festivals and won numerous awards, including the Silver Ribbon and the Golden Frog at the Camerimage Festival. Sono innamorato di Pippa Bacca (2019) received the BestRoundtable Pitch at the IDFA International Documentary Filmfestival in Amsterdam.
