Presented at The Screen of the Arts 2009Julian Rosefeldt (Munich, 1965), who lives near Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin, is Germany’s most succesful media artist. His visually powerful films without dialogues but of elaborate staging, holding a fine balance between a laconic sense of humour and a moral wholeheartedness, are presented in large-scale installations. Aside from his own artistic work he regularly designs videos for Thomas Ostermaier’s stage pieces at the Berlin Schaubühne. German film director Tom Tykwer chose Rosefeldt’s installations as background decoration for the Hollywood production The International, premiered at the Berlinale 2009. Heinz Peter Schwerfel’s film is a portrait of the German artist interviewed in his studio and during the making of American Night, filmed in southern Spain and the Canary Islands and co-produced by Kunstmuseum Bonn, which honored the artist with an extensive retrospective in 2009.
