The film was produced in the context of Wael Shawky’s participation in the “Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Materials”, originally conceived by Massimo Osanna and Andrea Viliani, who oversaw the production of the film. For the Egyptian artist, Pompeii is a symbol of the end and the beginning, a matrix of history and story, a natural ecosystem and a thousand-year-old witness to the stratification of Mediterranean cultures. The archaeological area therefore becomes a theatre of the constant mutual regeneration of memories and narratives, in which the temples of the Greco-Roman religion and those of Egyptian mythologies coexist, continuing to tell our relationship with what is human and what is divine, with our idea of justice, with our origins and how they have mixed together, leading us to here and now.
