Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival presents the fourth edition of VISIO – European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images.
VISIO consists of an exhibition and a series of seminars and meetings dedicated to expanding the vision and themes of artists, who use moving images in their artistic practice. By promoting encounters and international mobility, VISIO has favoured the development of a wide network of institutions, artists and professionals working with moving images.
The VISIO Programme, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, will be held in Florence, within the context of the 8th edition of Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival (17th -22nd November 2015). The participants will be 12 young European artists, who work with moving images; they will be selected with an open call, in collaboration with some of the most important European Art Academies, Schools and Artist Residencies. Thanks to the generous contribution of our partners, this year there will be no participation fee. The deadline to apply is September 21st 2015.
This year the Programme will include for the first time an exhibition, titled VISIO. Next Generation Moving Images, and a special Acquisition Prize. The exhibition will take place at the Strozzina, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (17th November – 20th December 2015) and will present a video work for each of the 12 participating artists as an overview on the practice of a new generation of visual artists working with moving images in Europe. The exhibition is produced and organized by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival.
The new VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize will be assigned to one of the participating artists and consists in the acquisition of one of his/her video works by the Seven Gravity Collection, a private Italian collection that focuses on video works by contemporary artists. Through this Prize Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival, thanks to the partnership with the Seven Gravity Collection, aims to support young artists by promoting the practice of collecting moving images works and video installations.
VISIO is creating a significant archive by mapping a new generation of artists working with film and video and based in Europe. Over 200 visual artists have applied to participate in the first three editions of the Programme. While maintaining its original identity as a training and networking project, VISIO has now developed into a much wider exhibition platform that is generating new opportunities and collaborations on an international level.
Structure
VISIO – European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images has a 6-part structure:
1. VISIO. Next Generation Moving Images
The exhibition will take place at the Strozzina, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (17th November – 20th December 2015) and will present a video work for each of the 12 participating artists as an overview on the practice of a new generation of visual artists working with moving images in Europe.
Curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, the exhibition intends to reflect on the variety of themes and languages used by young visual artists working with film and video, and provide an opportunity to discuss exhibition formats and audience reception of moving images works. The selection will try to reflect the diversity of mediums and formats in contemporary moving image practice: from analog to digital works, single-channel video and films projected on screens or played on monitors, and video installation and multichannel works.
The exhibition will have a strong laboratory approach and workshop activity. A dedicated space will be set-up for the seminars, meetings and workshops included in the VISIO Programme, some of which will be opened to the public. Round tables and presentations will be held during the week of the Festival and the 12 artists will illustrate their work to the public in brief 15 minutes lectures. Further meetings with important art professionals will take place every Thursday until the end of the exhibition.
2. Festival
The participating artists are invited to attend screenings, meetings and lectures of the Festival’s official program, and are encouraged to actively participate in the discussions. The main topics will then be expanded and developed during the seminars and conversations with the curators and artists hosted by the Festival. This year’s edition will feature works by Runa Islam, Harun Farocki and Martial Raysse among others.
3. VISIO. Young Talent Acquisition Prize
The Prize will be assigned to one of the participating artists and consists in the acquisition of one of his/her video work by the Seven Gravity Collection, a private Italian collection that focuses on video works from contemporary artists.
The Prize will be assigned by the Founding Members of the Seven Gravity Collection and the winning artist will be announced during Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival.
4. Artists Presentation
The participating artists will be asked to introduce their work in a 15 minutes presentation in the context of the Exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi. Here, they will have the opportunity to present the fundamental themes of their artistic practice to the other participants and to a selected audience.
5. Seminars
A series of seminars will be conducted by artists and curators who will speak about various aspects of their artistic practice and research methods with the participants. The seminars, which will last 2 hours each, will be structured in such a way as to allow also moments of discussion and sharing of experiences between the professionals and the participants. In the previous editions the seminars have been conducted by Isaac Julien, Marine Hugonnier, Philippe-Alain Michaud, Filipa Ramos, Deimantas Narkevicius, Mark Nash, Maria Lind, Alain Fleischer and Heinz Peter Schwerfel.
6. Conversation room
In this informal environment participants will meet every day, in 45-minutes round tables and individual encounters, artists, curators, critics, producers and directors of international institutions hosted by the Festival. Ranging from the presentation of their own portfolios to simple conversations, these moments are conceived as an occasion for encounters and exchanges that can foster the participants’ professional growth and extend their networks of international contacts
Brud
Brud (Polish for “filth”) is a shifting assemblage of sentient animals, vegetables, and minerals. No two are alike. Each instance is unique. Special Snowflake. They call themselves “a synecdoche, a hivemind, suicide bomb, or, a four-letter word”. Depends who you ask really. Their opinions contradict, their pronouns are plural, their genders fluid. Brud lives in a slaughterhouse in the center of Warsaw, called “Rzeźnia”. They run it as an Opera House. Here they create contemporary opera, in both the etymological and colloquial senses. “Opera” in Latin translates to “work”, which in Polish could be “Robota”, or “Praca”. Brud thus performs Robotic Praxis. Brud has issued a call to arms: “Absoletum Obsoletum”, or, “If It works It’s Out of Date”. Recent exhibitions include the XII Baltic Triennial, Vilnius, The Pink Spy, MHKA, Antwerp, and Zoon in a Zoot-Suit, kim?, Riga, Latvia.
Rebecca Digne
Marsiglia, 1982
WINNER OF THE FIRST EDITION OF “VISIO YOUNG TALENT ACQUISITION PRIZE”
Currently lives and works in Paris. She grew up in Naples, Italy. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. For two years (2010-2011) she was resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and then followed the residency program of the Palais de Tokyo: Le Pavillon, in Paris (2013-2014). Rebecca Digne’s pieces are enigmatic evocations that capture the projection and the exhibition space as a “place of resistance to time”. The image, both subject and medium, is operated as a territory where issues related to questions of waiting, time, identity, gesture or ritual intermingle. Among her recent exhibitions: Climats Artificiels, Fondation EDF, Paris, 2015; 100 years later, The Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2014; Profit and Non Profit, SpazioA, Pistoia, 2014; AB Show, Nomas Foundation, Rome; Facing Mercurio, Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art Gallery, Amsterdam, 2013. Her work is part of the collection of the Centre National d’Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
LucFosther Diop
Douala, Cameroon, 1980
Lives and works in Rotterdam, NL, and Douala, CM. He studied Fine Arts at the Yaounde1 University and was an artist in residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. LucFosther makes films, photographs, drawings, collages and installations. Usually, stories and events of racism, injustice, propaganda, slavery, colonialism, neocolonialism, imperialism, are the situations that trigger his process of creation. He approaches these terms in a metaphorical fashion. Seeking out visual strategies enable LucFosther to express specific aspects of the influences and impacts of neo-colonialism and imperialism, particularly on the African continent, and on the world in general. His work has been shown in significant exhibitions including the 2nd Thessaloniki Biennal, 2009, the 11th Havana Biennal, 2012, the 14th PhotoEspana, 2011, and the 18th SESC_Videobrasil Festival, 2013. His video We Are One won the FAAP Artistic Residency Prize during the 18th SESC_Videobrasil Festival, 2013. He also received a Unesco-Aschberg Award for French Africa in 2013.
Alessandro Di Pietro
Messina, 1987
Lives and works in Milan. His artistic practice is focused on the process of normalization and deviation from the standard, in material and linguistic terms. In the last two years his main projects New Void and A project on A Zed and Two Noughts (P. Greenaway, 1985) find their field of action in cinematographic grammar. Hoël Duret
Nantes, 1988
Is living and working between Paris, Brest and Nantes. He holds an MA from the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes in 2011. As a synthesis of the “Do It Yourself” ideology and the utopia of the family unit of the “American Way of Life”, handcrafting is central to the work of Hoël Duret. What interested him in the process of amateur practice was not so much the specific aesthetics of the assemblage but to find, to display and to demonstrate that economic constraints can engender productivist intelligence. He’s been awarded the Young Creation Award of the Biennale of Mulhouse in 2012, the Visual Arts Prize of the City of Nantes and the Yishu 8 Prize in 2014. In 2015 he has been exhibited in solo shows at Park Life Gallery, San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts in Mulhouse, LOOP Video Fair, Barcelona, and in a group show at the Salomon Foundation, Annecy. He has also been invited to perform two solo shows during two residences at Yishu 8 Art Space, Beijing, and L’Oeil de Poisson, Contemporary Art Center, Québec City. In 2016 he has been selected for Le Pavillon Neufize OBC research lab of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and will participate to a group show at the Seoul Art Museum, Seoul.
Roberto Fassone
Savigliano, 1986
Lives and works in Asti. He makes works that explore and question the processes and the strategies regulating the production of contemporary artworks. In 2012 he created sibi, an instructions generator for the production of potential artworks. The software has been tested in workshops in collaboration with Universities and art institutions. In 2014 he presented Jeg Er Enorme Jævler, a 90 minutes movie in two parts. He has exhibited and performed his work at Carroll/Fletcher, London, ZHdK, Zurich, MARS Gallery, Melbourne, MAMbo, Bologna, and Link Cabinet among many others. He was part of the Jury Selection of the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival and he has been recently selected for the Live Work Performance Act Award in Fies (Dro).
Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze
Kutaisi, Georgia,1983
Lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts where he received an MA. During that period he formed student collectives together with fellow students with whom he was actively engaged in mobilizing and organizing a student body that would demand systemic reforms within the University. This process and the collective action led to the current on-going summer school project, Evolution of consciousness and the Post-Human Society, which he is co-organising and co-leading. It was created at the beginning of September 2015, and aims to rise the consciousness of the necessity to reform the state educational system among the student body. He continued his studies at KABK in The Hague; in 2012 he joined the New Media class at the University of Arts in Berlin, where he received his degree and is currently completing his master. Recently his focus has shifted more towards the moving image, the politics of its production, distribution and circulation. Émilie Pitoiset
Paris, 1980
Lives and works in Paris. She produces artworks that activate a series of characters and fictions through an on-going narrative that deals with the exhibition as a format, including elements such as film and performance. Her work is infused by figures such as Woolf, Ackerman, Robbe-Grillet, Flaubert, Huysmans and Fassbinder, that she mirrors and leads astray into a subtle “eroticisation” of the every day life. She plays with uncanny scenarios with which she unfolds a surrealistic visual grammar which is both enigmatic, noir and decadent. Recent solo projects include It’s all the gold that i have, Klemm’s Gallery, Berlin; The silent actions, Frac Champagne Ardenne, Reims, and You are late. Ceremony in Les Eglises, Chelles. Pitoiset has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in such museums as Witte de With, Centre National d’Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Badischer Kunstverein, Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Bielefeld Kunstverein, Museum Ostwall, Kadist Art Foundation. Her work is part of several collections including the Centre National d’Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
Janis Rafa
Greece, 1984
Lives and works between Amsterdam and Athens. She completed her education in Fine Art (BA, MA, PhD) at the University of Leeds in Britain with scholarship by the Arts & Humanities Research Council. Her body of work spans from experimental-documentary practices, to video-essays, archival footage and most recently cinematic narratives and medium length films. She has recently completed the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten residency (2013-2014) in Amsterdam, with a scholarship by Onassis Foundation (GR). Her first solo exhibition was presented at Martin van Zomeren Gallery, Amsterdam, 2014. She has participated in group exhibitions: 1st Research Pavilion, Venice Biennial, 2015; Art Rotterdam Projections, Kunstvereniging Diepenheim, 2015; Ce que raconte la solitude, ART-O-RAMA, 2014; Rijksakademie OPEN, 2013 – 2014, Manifesta 8, 2010; No Soul For Sale, Tate Modern, 2010. Anike Joyce Sadiq
Heidelberg, Germany, 1985
She is now living and working in Florence participating to the residency program of Villa Romana as a fellow. She studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts. Using her videos, interventions and performances, she creates zones of social contact and discusses practices of alienation and exclusion. She addresses the viewer as an actor and companion. Sadiq has already participated in numerous projects, exhibitions and performance events. Dan Walwin
Frome, United Kingdom, 1986
Lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied at Goldsmiths College, London, and then was a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in 2012-13, Amsterdam. Walwin’s works pay acute and visceral attention to details and detritus, channelled and contained inside hybrid and potentially uncomfortably ill-fitting forms. These evoke associations with pop culture, scientific research and speculative fiction, while employing scale and imitation as means to structure the atmosphere of a viewer’s encounter with the work. Baha Görkem Yalim
Izmir, Turkey, 1987
Lives and works in Amsterdam. After a long education in applied sciences in which he also had the chance to be involved in art in public spaces and art history lessons, he worked as an engineer in various locations such as energy companies and military material production factories in Turkey. In 2015 he obtained a BA in fine arts at the VAV (Audiovisual) department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Currently he is working on a new research on political factions, their systems of violence and radical action stemming specifically from fanatic acts towards cultural heritage, and on the causality of this radical behaviour. He is looking at the linguistic turn in concepts such as radicalism, construction and destruction and their mutability; an interest that was triggered by the recent acts of Islamic State and the current government of Turkey.
