Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles (Rio de Janeiro, 1948), one of the protagonists of the 2009 Venice Biennale, awarded with “Ordway Prize” and with “Premio Velázquez de las Artes Plásticas” in 2008, is a pioneer of conceptual art and the creator of sculptures and installations that have a strong visual and emotional impact. Gerald Fox’s documentary follows the artist during the preparations for his 2008 solo show at the Tate Modern and covers Meireles’ voyage from Rio de Janeiro, where the artist lives and works, on to London. Whether in his studio, in meetings with family members as well as with helpers, or visiting places that inspire his works and the museums where these come to light, Meireles talks touchingly about his life and work. He is clearly inspired by the evocative and communicative power of the objects that make up his work. With his words, he takes the viewers “lejos” or “far away”- which is his favourite word. The film is accompanied by music especially created by one of his sons.
