Ulay Performing Life

When asked what moved him to allow this film to be produced, Ulay -a pioneer of body and performance art who for a long time was companion of Marina Abramović- answered that an artist becomes a lot more interesting when he’s about to die. He received a cancer diagnosis a few months before filming began. The documentary follows him from Slovenia to Berlin, New York to Amsterdam (where he spent his youth), and becomes an opportunity to re-live forty years, meeting friends and artists who knew him -Marina Abramović, Chuck Close, New York gallerist Sean Kelly, director of Performa RoseLee Goldberg- and the editing of archival footage of his works and performances: a genuine cinematic diary to discover what he built and what he’ll leave behind.
