Amid dense layers of ink-filled newspaper and images from film archives, Razeh-del (Secret of the Heart) tells the story of Zan (Woman), the first Iranian women’s magazine. Published for a brief period during the 1990s under the regime, the magazine inspires two young high school girls to write a script for an impossible film: the story of an illicit love between two women who decide to set fire to the Ministry of Culture. Through intensely saturated hues of amethyst, crimson, and amber, and whispered, fragmented, and suspended sounds accompanying the archival footage, the film reflects on the presence of women in Iranian cinema and, more broadly, in Iranian society.
