The second episode of a trilogy, of which Lo schermo dell’arte presented Mad Mieter in 2021, features the same protagonists: mantises and stick insects moving through a perfectly reconstructed miniature architectural environment, blending the architecture of a bunker with that of a club. The 3D macro camera follows one of the insects as it slowly descends the stairs to enter a space defined by neon lights, designer sofas, empty liquor bottles, and a dance floor. Elements of techno culture, some of which seem familiar, blend with the brutalist landscape of the bunker and the almost anthropomorphic appearance of the mantises, creating a disquieting image.
M+M stands for the artistic collaboration between Marc Weis (Germany, 1965) and Martin De Mattia (Germany, 1963). The filmmaker and artist duo live in Munich, Germany. M+M have received residency grants at the Villa Massimo in Rome and the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, among others. Solo exhibitions have taken place at Galeria Helga de Alvear, Madrid; Museo Sprengel, Hannover; Museo Villa Stuck, Monaco; Kunstsammlungen, Chemnitz; Museo d’Arte Moderna, Bologna; Casino – Forum d’Art Contemporain, Lussemburgo. In addition, the duo has participated in numerous international film festivals and group exhibitions.
