Anri Sala’s film is the result of a collaborative project conceived and developed with Šejla Kameric, from which two distinct works originated. Through Tchaikovsky’s Patetica, played by the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Ari Benjamin Meyers, as well as Spanish actress Maribel Verdú’s extraordinary performance, 1395 Days Without Red takes us back to the tension-packed atmosphere of any one of the 1395 days of the Siege of Sarajevo, between 1992 and 1996. Days in which the life of the city, including its cultural life, never stopped, even though the simplest actions, such as going outside and crossing the street, meant exposure to extreme danger. Of all the citizens the protagonist encounters during her walk along the silent, colorless street known as Sniper Alley, Meliha Vareshanovic emerges; with her proud, elegant stride, immortalized by a photographer, she became the incarnation of the population’s courage and urgent need for freedom.
Anri Sala born in Tirana in 1974, Anri Sala became known in the areas of video-cinematography, installation, photography and performance due to the committed and engaging nature of his work, which is characterized by the tight rapport between images and music. Winner of many awards, including the Young Artist Prize at the Biennale di Venezia (2001), the Prix Gilles Dusein, Paris (2000) and the Absolut Art Award (2011). He has had one-man shows in the world’s main museums, including the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Montreal (2011), Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (2008), ARC Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2004) and in many international group shows, including Biennale di Venezia (2001 and 2003), the Yokohama Triennial (2001), and Manifesta 3, Ljubljana (2000). He lives and works in Berlin.
