Made for ARTE TV channel’s Live Art series, created by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Schwerfel, the film will be aired in early 2018.
A sentence at the beginning suggests a key to approach the French artist’s work: “Is it possible to show time? Philippe Parreno materializes the invisible by making visible what we otherwise miss.” Filmed in New York between May and June 2015 at his solo show in the Armory Drill Hill on Park Avenue, the film follows the show’s installation, with narration by Obrist, Parreno and pianist Mikhail Rudy.
Since the early 1980s, Parreno has created choreographed exhibitions based on real screenplays: the exhibition takes place in time so that visitors live situations which change daily. Cinema screens move up and down, sheds with hundreds of lamps turn on and off, a round stage rotates, player pianos play. Parreno is an artist and author of films that become sculptures; a computer director, the director of an invisible orchestra, a choreographer of sounds and lights

Heinz Peter Schwerfel
Born 1954 in Cologne, lives in Paris and Cologne, filmmaker and art critic. He works for the German edition of ART Kunstmagazin, for Lettre International and ZEIT, among others, and has published several books on contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, Jannis Kounellis, Markus Lüpertz, as well as essays: Art after Ground Zero and Cinema and Art, a book about the relationship between contemporary art and Hollywood, translated into Turkish. He is the founder and artistic director of the former KunstFilmBiennale, Cologne (2002 - 2009) and today of the festival Kino der Kunst, Munich (since 2013), focussing on fictional films by artists.
