The title of the film indicates a relationship of trust and intimacy. The “I” of the title refers to the voice-over by Marianne Stockebrand, the late Donald Judd’s companion. She tells of their 1988 visit to Austrian architect Rudolph Schindler’s house on King’s Road, Los Angeles.
The camera shows us another space, the White Building in Marfa, Texas, part of the Chinati Foundation, created by Judd and administered by Stockebrand after the artist’s death. The LA room where Donald Judd first discovered Schindler’s furniture, and was moved to buy a whole set, is re-imagined by contemporary director Sasha Pirker, who pairs Schindler’s angular pieces with some of Judd’s first paintings. The exclusive relationship between Donald Judd and “I” becomes a faceted dialogue, which includes the director, but especially between Schindler and Judd.
